Making sure that your carpet is always clean will do a lot to help you get rid of dirt and allergen. Carpets are known to harbor a lot of these particles, which could lead to health problems for those who are sensitive enough when exposed to them. As they say, prevention is better than cure. So better regularly clean up your carpet instead of paying for medicine later on.

As a general rule, carpets should be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner regularly, say, once or twice every week. This should be enough already to keep dust from accumulating in regular homes. If your home receives more foot traffic, you should increase the frequency of vacuum cleaning accordingly. For cases where there are heavy stains on the surface, it calls for steam cleaning.

Before doing your vacuum cleaning work, remove clutter from the floor that may only get stuck in the vacuum cleaner. Pay special attention to children's rooms, where there may be some scattered pieces of small toys on the floor. Regularly removing large bits of dirt and soil may also prevent them from further embedding themselves deep into the carpet or getting walked over by foot traffic. Whenever you see stains on the carpet, remove it as immediately as possible because dirt only becomes more difficult to remove as time passes by.

In certain cases, when the dirt cannot be removed, steam cleaning is already required. Steam cleaning involves the application of steam and pressure to deep clean heavy stains on your carpet. You can purchase a steam cleaner from your nearest hardware or rent it instead. Before proceeding with the steam cleaning process, make sure to take all furniture out of the way first in order to make your entire carpet available for cleaning. It's advisable to use a vacuum cleaner first to remove what you can already remove.

Read the instructions on your steam cleaner for detailed instructions on how you will carry the steam cleaning. This may include pre-treating the stain to ready it for steam cleaning.

Carpets are generally perceived to be healthy because they filter out dust and allergen present in the air and trap them in the fibers of the carpet. However, remember this will only be realized if the carpet is adequately cleaned. So make sure that you do.
